EARLY LEARNING CENTRE

PHILOSOPHY

At Kincoppal-Rose Bay Early Learning Centre we are inspired by the approaches used in Reggio Emilia and the philosophies of the Forest Schools in Northern Europe. Our own beliefs combine with these to bring about experiences where children are encouraged to become researchers in their own learning, building upon their curiosities and wonders and being challenged to make meaning about the mysteries of their worlds.

Along with our strength in the five goals of Sacred Heart Education, the Joigny Centre and Sophie’s Cottage has created spaces where children are inspired, captivated, engaged and provoked both indoors and out in nature. There are spaces where they can collaborate with others including teachers and where they can delve deeper into the curiosities and marvels that attract them. Spaces where they can be themselves and explore all that intrigues them, from the hidden life in a rotting log to the tallest mountain in the world, to mythical dragons living up the drain and the colours of wonder that explode from their minds when they think. Investigations are an integral part of the learning.

EDUCATIONAL VISION

The aim of our work with the youngest members of our school community is to support children’s discovery and learning within the context of close, supportive and deeply felt relationships with one another. We work with children collaboratively, closely involved in the processing of their interests and investigations. Through investigations using expertise of both adults and children alike, we research, build together or co-construct knowledge. Children engage best in learning through hands-on exploration of ideas. They have strong ideas or ‘theories’ about the world. It is through listening that we really hear each child we educate. As parents you will see the learning come alive and how your competent, capable child approaches their learning through our practice of documenting. In this way we endeavour to reveal the process of learning as a journey towards understanding.

“The art of research already exists in the hands of children acutely sensitive to the pleasure of surprise. The wonder of learning, of knowing, of understanding is one of the first fundamental sensations each human being expects from experiences faced alone or with others”  Loris Malaguzzi
